(I wrote this on Sept 30, 2008)
That's the name of the song Richard Wright sang from Pink Floyd's first album “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.”
On 15th Sept, this particular piper didn't appear at those gates - he will never do that again. He died and has gone to the great gig in the sky.
That leaves a big hole in the hearts of people like me. I grew up with the music of Pink Floyd and of course other stuff. Dark Side and The Wall are central to my universe, even now. I lived through the facts that Jimi, Lennon, Pearl, and many others are gone, and that Wright has joined them. But the slow and final realisation that a chapter has ended in the life of music that is important to me - that's tough to manage.
Someday soon, Wright will get his "Wish you were here" moment. And I will be there too - in the Great Gig in the Sky - someday, in person.
